Governing the World

Democracy, dictatorship, left, right...what do they mean and how do they affect us?

Different people will define these ideas in slightly different ways, but the basic idea behind each of the four is as follows:

Democracy - Everyone has a say in how a group is run
Dictatorship - One person or clique decides how a group is run
Left Wing - The community is more important than the individual
Right Wing - The individual is more important than the community

Life and government is more complex than that, but those are the basics. To help here's a little picture of it all.

I've included a few nations to give you an idea of where things stand.

What may surprise you is the position of the USA, the UK, and other western democracies. Let me explain.

The moment you have an elected government you are no longer a full democracy as the population of the group no longer has a say in everything. It is now the government that decides. The more referenda that a nation has, the closer it gets to a full democracy, hence the position of Switzerland.

In the UK and the USA, the nearest we get to a say in government policy is when we have an election. It's still democratic, but it's not a full democracy, nor is it a dictatorship.

Countries that use Proportional Representation would be closer to full democracies than those that use constituencies and/or First Past The Post systems, as they allow the parliaments to more accurately represent the political feelings of the nation.

Iraq is not a dictatorship as such, but it's fairly close. Also as it is currently in a state of near anarchy it veers more to individual needs being more important than group needs, hence its position.

Sweden and the other Nordic countries put the community first and the individual second, but it's not a society where the individual is ignored, hence its position in the teardrop.

There's a lot you will disagree with there, but if you do, please remember the definitions of the four points I used earlier.

For now, please think about your government and how democratic/dictatorial it is.

This is a really great breakdown! And whoa, the US is really over there, not that it should be all that surprising I guess. I believe we should all be aiming for the middle, as no side is ever ideal without an infiltration from the other. Don't ask me how to go about it though! You even utter a word that could loosely relate to "socialism" in the US and they'll string you up. They're really starting to be the most backwards of all the first world nations in almost every way and it's a shame.
