Remembering 2015 - Writing

Another year is coming to a close and it's been different to most years, more positive. I still have mental health problems, but they are under control, while other aspects of my life are taking a more positive shape.

Writing has seen a subtle change this year, though not much growth.

After helping a couple of authors edit their books I've had honourable mentions on the dedication page. Small, but a lift.

In my own writing I haven't done as much as I could have, but that's mainly due to pressures of work and mental health problems, though I have kept up with my quarterly article and book reviews (sort of). At least I haven't missed a deadline.

I plan to have my first two novels back in paperback by the end of the year, and will carry on with a third, unrelated, novel that has a very special guest star, one Gretyl Trollop. I plan to finish it off in the new year and release it by the summer.

One of the best things to have happened this year has been the Starfish Publishing Co-Op. I've been trying to get it launched in one way or another for several years and have now, withe the help of several others, have managed to do so. It still needs tweaking. work and a lot of help to get it noticed, but the groundwork has been laid. We have a website and a Twitter account and will soon have a Facebook page. It's dedicated to independant authors with the moniker of 'authors helping authors'.

Books sales haven't been as good as last year, but I did some promotions in October which saw them rise high in the free download charts and have started earning a bit of money from the Kindle lending library. There was a spike of downloads at the start of November and, judging by the page count, most people finished them. One person didn't and left a 1 star review. But at least they reviewed it!

I nearly had my first play performed, but I couldn't fully cast it so had to abandon that idea, though I will put it to other amateur theatre groups and let them have a think. Watch this space.

All in all, it's not been a good year writing-wise. But, considering that I've changed jobs, had my second son move in with me (he now occupies the front room as 'his' bedroom) and had problems with depression, it's not been too bad either.

In the last few years I've seen a steady progression as an author, little wins here and there, rises and falls and quite a few difficulties, some of which were of my own making. But I'm still here, still moving on and still looking forward to making a living as a writer.

2016? Come and take me on if you think you're hard enough.
